We frequently get this question so we figured it's better for us (and our customers) to write a different article on what this really is and to provide some use cases of it, just for clarity 🙃

First of all, you should be aware that this applies to choosing the billing cycle for your products. Whenever you're choosing to bill your customers on a monthly or quarterly basis you're given an option to choose to bill them on an ad-hoc basis as well 👇

All other subscription intervals (billing/shipping cycles) are automatically handled on an ad-hoc basis. We're talking about the following:

  • Weekly
  • Biweekly
  • Bimonthly
  • Every 4 weeks
  • Every 6 weeks
  • Every 4 months
  • Every 6 months
  • Annually

These ☝ are always billed on an ad-hoc basis ❗

So, what is ad-hoc billing?

When handled on an ad-hoc basis, your customers will always be billed straight after they finish the checkout for the first order (unless you're utilizing trial functionality or your products are available for pre-ordering), and then rebilled on exactly the same date honoring the chosen billing schedule for the product. Examples to follow 👇

Product setup

  • Billing frequency: weekly
  • Shipping frequency: weekly

Workflow

  • Customer signs up for a weekly product on 15th of Feb
  • He/she is billed on the same day and 1st order is generated immediately with shipping date set to 15th of Feb as well
  • Customer is scheduled for renewal and next shipment on 22th of Feb (exactly 7 days from when he/she initially signed up)
  • Process repeats every 7 days until the subscription is cancelled

Product setup:

  • Billing frequency: bimonthly (every 2 months or every other month)
  • Shipping frequency: bimonthly

Workflow:

  • Customer subscribes to a product on 15th of Feb
  • He/she is billed on the same day and 1st order is generated immediately with shipping date set to 15th of Feb as well
  • Customer is scheduled for renewal and next shipment on 15th of April (exactly 2 months from when he/she initially signed up)
  • Process repeats every 2 months until the subscription is cancelled

FAQ

How can I set cut-off date for products that are not on monthly subscription schedule?

As of now, you can only utilize cut-off date functionality with set rebilling dates for monthly products or using seasonal billing capability attributable to quarterly subscription setup. Every other subscription interval is always handled on ad-hoc basis as explained in this article.

How can I align my ad-hoc products' billing schedule with other products?

If you're handling your monthly products utilizing cut-off and set rebilling dates but you're offering the same product available for bimonthly as well, you're able to align rebilling dates for both of these by manually changing renewal dates for your bimonthly products.
